Cumulative updates are quite important for users on Windows 10, and fortunately, Microsoft rolls out new versions every once in a while, and today it’s the turn of build 14342 to get one.
Before anything, keep in mind that this is an update specifically aimed at Windows insiders running build 14342, so unless you are currently on this version, you won’t see it.
The new cumulative update arrives as KB3158988 and only brings fixes and improvements. There’s no KB page available at the moment, but Gabe Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has said in a statement that it includes fixes for a bug that makes it impossible to close Microsoft Edge.
At the same time, it also addresses an issue where users can’t get context menu to work when turning off all extensions without uninstalling them. And last but not least, it comes with a couple of fixes “for issues causing some devices to bugcheck,” which in plain English means causing BSODs.
Available via Windows Update
The only way to get the new cumulative update at the moment is via Windows Update, so if you’re on Windows 10 build 14342, simply fire up Settings and go to Update & security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
There are no reports of problems installing the cumulative update (as it happened before), but it pretty much makes sense, given the fact that it’s just a minor pack of improvements aimed at only a bunch of users running a preview build of Windows 10.
On the other hand, it’s still a recommended update for everyone running this build, so make sure you install it as soon as possible. A new build for Windows 10 PCs and mobile devices is also expected to land in the coming days, most likely next week (unless Microsoft takes everyone by surprise and ships it today), and it’s always a good idea to be up to date.
