As part of the Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS (Xenial Xerus) announcement, Martin Wimpress informs us about the release of the Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 LTS operating systems for users of Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS.

Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 LTS is not a major release, and if your Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) installation is up to date, you already have the latest software updates and security patches that have been injected in the new installation mediums generated mainly for those who want to reinstall or deploy the OS on new systems.

There are, however, some small changes to various of the in-house built tools. For example, Ubuntu MATE Welcome has been updated with a working partition resizer when deploying Ubuntu MATE on Raspberry Pi single-board computers and removal of the linux-firmware-nonfree package.

The Ubuntu MATE Artwork received fixes for the style of the Calendar applet, consistent GTK2 and GTK3 scrollbars, and implementation of single-colored progress bars. Moreover, it is now possible to switch keyboard layouts using the Alt+Shift shortcut in Ubuntu MATE Settings.

MATE 1.14 desktop environment now available

Of course, the biggest change of the Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 LTS (Xenial Xerus) release is the inclusion of the MATE 1.14 desktop environment, which has been previously seeded to Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS users last month. This means that if you want to install Ubuntu MATE on a new PC, you’ll get the full MATE Desktop 1.14 experience.

Other than that, the Ubiquity installer has been updated to prompt users to join available Wi-Fi networks during the installation, and it looks like the shutdown/restart operation now works for the live session in VirtualBox and VMware virtual machines. Download Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 LTS right now via our website for 64-bit, 32-bit, and PowerPC systems.
