is launching a new service that’s definitely a first for the wireless industry. It’s called Sprint Direct 2 You and it aims to make the process of purchasing and setting up a new phone easier. The concept is that when you’re ready to purchase a new phone, you can simply pick it out and a dedicated Sprint representative will drive to your house, the coffee shop, the office or any other place you wish to meet, and hand-deliver it to you with full set-up, data transfer and usage guide included.
The idea stemmed from a recent experience that Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure had, in which a technician came out to his family’s residence and installed a new television system. Claure was so impressed with the experience that he decided to provide a similar offering from Sprint, spawning Sprint Direct 2 You.
The program recently launched in Sprint’s hometown of Kansas City, and will expand to Miami and Chicago next week. Throughout the year, Sprint Direct 2 You will expand to more major markets, with a goal to have 5,000 Sprint Direct 2 You cars on the road by the end of 2015. In addition, Sprint is saying that if you’re not in a Sprint Direct 2 You area, it’s going to be even easier to find a Sprint store near you, thanks to its agreement with RadioShack 1,435 co-branded Sprint stores.
Sprint Direct 2 You is an interesting concept, but it remains to be seen how well it will work in reality. That being said, there are plenty of people out there who will love a service like this. The sheer ease and simplicity of just getting a new phone remains quite appealing to many who are confused by the rapidly-changing smartphone market. For those people, Sprint Direct 2 You could work quite well, allowing them to have their phone set up for them, and then having them taught about how to use it.
