This week, Samsung attended the Display Week conference in San Francisco where it showcased a prototype for a 5.5-inch 4K display, among other next-gen displays.

The 4K display comes with a resolution of 3840×2160 and a pixel density of 806 PPI, according to SlashGear. By comparison, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive come with a resolution of 2160×1200. However, Samsung recently partnered with Oculus, which means that the latter might gain access to the technology as well.

Samsung showcased a prototype, which means we could expect them to release a VR headset next year, one that would be equipped with a similar screen.

It’s also not completely out of the question for Samsung to implement the 4K display on the Galaxy S8 device next year, which would be a major selling point for the smartphone.

The screen’s brightness level reaches 350 nits and it manages to achieve 97% coverage of the color palette RBG. Still, Sony’s Xperia Z5 Premium came with a display that had 801 PPI, almost as much as the 4K display that Samsung showed off.

Samsung also displayed the new AMOLED panel technology, Bio Blue

Samsung’s 4K display will certainly make an impact on the market, especially since that kind of pixel resolution would be great for VR, compared with current devices.

Along with the 4K display, Samsung also introduced the new AMOLED panel technology, Bio Blue. It aims to reduce the proportion of blue light in the emissions spectrum of the screen. Particularly, the proportion of blue when using Blue Bio is only 6%, while when using conventional AMOLED panels it reaches 32%.

The lightfield display also gives the user a sense of depth, almost like holograms that can be viewed from various angels. This also means that parallax effect might be available on the screen.
