LG is rumored to be working on a foldable smartphone with flexible display that would be unveiled in the first half of next year. A report by ETNews reveals that LG might be unveiling such smartphones next year.

This wouldn’t be the first time that LG takes it to the next level and creates a smartphone with an interesting display, the LG G Flex had a curved screen and made quite the impression on the market. The G Flex line of smartphones came with plastic OLED displays that allowed them to be flexible and not break under pressure.

The report says that LG has started developing foldable display. At the end of last year, the company established a task force team and transferred its foldable display project to its development department. LG is said to have equipped one of its display manufacturing factories in Gumi with tools for producing 6th generation plastic OLED displays.

LG’s foldable smartphones could come with OLED displays made out of plastic

The reason why the company choose plastic is because the material would make it easier for displays to be folded, bended and reshaped. LG is said to be working on a device that would fold in half and plastic OLED displays have the capacity to fold or even roll if needed.

In addition, the report suggests that LG Display plans to start production at its facilities in Gumi in the first half of next year. Samsung is another major smartphone manufacturer that has been long rumored to be working on smartphones with foldable displays.

In fact, Samsung’s Galaxy X is expected to be unveiled in the first half of next year. The Samsung smartphone would come with a flexible 4K AMOLED display that would fold in half and would incorporate all the latest specs.

If the rumors are true, then next year will surely see a fierce competition between Samsung and LG on the market of smartphones with flexible displays.
